'Culture' that Safety Culture!

I recently read an article on Safety Culture, written by a member of Event Safety Alliance (USA). In the article he describes the two definitions of 'culture':

As a noun: The behaviours & beliefs of a particular social, ethnic or age group.

As a verb: To maintain an organism in conditions suitable for growth.

From a health & safety perspective, combining these two descriptions results in the perfect scenario! First, we provide the behaviour & beliefs through policy, procedure and modelling from leaders. Then, we 'culture' this with support, communication and encouragement. The 'conditions suitable for growth' should include: the opportunity to be heard (e.g. contributing to discussion during team meetings), the knowledge to contribute effectively (provision & sharing of information from leaders), the opportunity to up-skill (training can be in-house or through other providers), and above all, a caring environment (people perform better if they feel valued).

So 'culture' that Safety Culture!

Health & Safety for everyone

Health & Safety isn't just for 'Tradies'...offices, retail stores, cafes...everyone needs to prioritise creating a healthy & safe work environment. Developing an easy to use health & safety system that weaves through every part of your business will help to engage your team. Make health & safety a priority in every work task to maintain focus.

This also extends through to who you select as your suppliers and contractors. Are they prioritising health & safety too? If not, do you really want to share a business relationship with them?
